We are proud to announce that the IMMLab research team has been honored with the Bronze Prize at the highly competitive 13th Application Design and Manufacturing Competition 2025. This event is organized by the Center for Science and Technology Development for Youth.
Our award-winning project, titled “Green Synthesis of Nanomaterials from Agricultural By-products for Food Preservation, Bio-labeling, and Electronic Components,” addresses a critical challenge in sustainable nanotechnology.
Nanomaterials have become indispensable across a broad spectrum of industries. However, conventional synthesis methods often rely on hazardous chemicals and consume significant energy, which poses environmental risks. Our research adopts a green, eco-friendly approach by harnessing bioactive compounds naturally present in abundant agricultural by-products — such as guava leaves, avocado seeds, green tea leaves, and banana peels — to serve as reducing and stabilizing agents during nanoparticle synthesis.
This biogenic synthesis method allows precise control over particle size and morphology of key nanomaterials, including silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), zinc oxide (ZnO), copper oxide (CuO), and carbon dots. Importantly, it avoids the environmental burden associated with traditional chemical routes. Our study thoroughly explores the synthesis mechanisms, material characterizations, and multifunctional properties of these nanomaterials.
Beyond fundamental insights, our project demonstrates impactful applications, such as enhancing food shelf life through natural antimicrobial coatings, advancing bio-labeling technologies for medical diagnostics, and fabricating sustainable components for electronics. Moreover, this strategy supports circular economy principles by transforming agricultural waste into high-value functional materials.
Winning the Bronze Prize affirms IMMLab’s commitment to innovative and sustainable materials research that bridges scientific advancement and societal needs. We extend our sincere gratitude to the competition organizers and congratulate all team members for their dedicated efforts.
