The IMC research team has been honored with the Third Prize at The 4th Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Awards 2025

We are proud to announce that the In-memory Computing research team has been honored with the Third Prize at The 4th Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Awards 2025This event is organized by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council and the People's Committee Head Office.

Research team at the Ceremony

Under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Kim Ngoc, PhD student and M.Sc. Pham Phu Quan has been leading the research team in developing a memristor chip for in-memory computing applications. After an extended period of experimentation and development, we are honored to submit this research to the 4th Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Awards 2025.

Solution Title: INTEGRATED MEMRISTOR–DIODE ARRAY FOR NEXT-GENERATION ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK APPLICATIONS

This solution proposes a memristor–diode integrated chip structure utilizing chromium oxide (CrOx) semiconductor thin films, fabricated via DC magnetron sputtering. The chip simultaneously exhibits two key properties: the self-rectifying behavior of diodes and the analog resistive switching characteristic of memristive memory.

The research team successfully developed and transferred a fabrication process from single-cell devices to an 8-bit memristor chip, integrating a total of 256 memory cells within an 18 × 18 mm² area using stencil lithography. This device enables the creation of artificial synaptic arrays that can store synaptic weights and process input signals such as images or sounds.

Thanks to its self-rectifying nature, the memristor chip allows for optimized energy consumption, making it particularly well-suited for simple crossbar array architectures and enhancing energy efficiency during the training of artificial intelligence systems.

Introduction to the Award:

According to the organizing committee, the 4th Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Awards (2025) were launched in September 2023. By February 14, 2025, the committee had received 292 submissions from individuals and groups across the seven fields.

Based on the recommendations of the responsible agencies in each field, 60 entries were shortlisted and reviewed by the evaluation council. Ultimately, 51 entries were unanimously selected for the 4th Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Awards. Among them, 4 first prizes, 15 second prizes, and 32 third prizes were awarded.

Award recipient: A Certificate of Achievement, The Innovation Award Trophy
Acknowledgment:

To achieve the objectives of this research, the team gratefully acknowledges the financial support from the VINIF Innovation Foundation and the valuable collaboration from the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
